Congratulations to Zhengtao Ma on His PhD Confirmation!
2025, March
We’re thrilled to share that Zhengtao has successfully completed his PhD confirmation.
Zhengtao’s research is focused on designing haptic interfaces that make future autonomous vehicles, like Robotaxis, more accessible for blind and low-vision users. His goal is to create interaction systems that do not rely on visual information, ensuring these future technologies are inclusive, informative, and empowering for everyone.
Driven by a passion for inclusive design and a commitment to equity in emerging technologies, Zhengtao is exploring how touch-based feedback can support safe and confident interactions in vehicles where traditional controls and displays may no longer be relevant.
His confirmation was supported by a thoughtful and experienced panel: Professor Margot Brereton (Chair), Dr Mo Faramarzian, Associate Professor Rafael Gomez, and Professor Ronald Schroeter. Their guidance helped shape the next stage of Zhengtao’s research journey.
Having commenced his PhD in April 2024, Zhengtao now moves into the next phase—conducting focus groups with blind and low-vision participants. This work will explore their expectations and preferences for interacting with self-driving vehicles, and help inform the development of more intuitive, touch-based systems.
Congratulations Zhengtao on reaching this milestone and continuing to champion inclusive innovation!
